Mel Babcock demonstrates his Rubik's Cube Die Box, which is one of Magic House of Babcock's best-selling props. He said each magician puts their own personality into a trick. It's not how it works, it's the presentation, he said. A good presentation takes hours and hours of practice. |

Babcock casts spells with his House of Magic
 | Mel Babcock was 13 years old when his uncle taught him a simple card trick. Soon after that, a comic book advertisement for "10 Easy Magic Tricks" caught his eye.
The money he sent in for the magic kit was one of the best investments he ever made.
"I tell people, 'I knew, then, I had wasted those first 12 years,'" he said.
Now 79, Babcock has been involved in magic in one form or another since, and he has earned a reputation not just as a magician, but as the maker of magical items and proprieter of the Magic House of Babcock.

| | Cashmere Chamber moving to new office | Jill FitzSimmons spent her first week as the new Cashmere Chamber of Commerce manager getting to know the day-to-day operation of the office, learning phone numbers and the answers to the most common phone calls.
She hasn't yet figured out the location of the nearest FedEx or the Department of Licensing office, but she is up to speed on the Chelan County Fair and the Cashmere Museum and on the coupon books available. And she is starting to put together names and faces of some chamber members and town residents. Several people stopped by to introduce themselves, she said.
She started making lists of people to meet and details to learn, with plans to go door-to-door and introduce herself to business owners during her second week on the job.

| | Bulldogs aim for another league title in 2010 | For the three-time defending league champion, each new season is not so much a matter of rebuilding but rather reloading. The Bulldogs return 10 starters, including reigning Caribou Trail League MVP, senior quarterback Tyler McNair.
"He may not be the best thrower, but he makes up for it because he is a very strong runner, and we're an option football team," said Head Coach Phil Zukowski. "Along with that, he has great leadership. He leads this team."
McNair would appear to have some capable back-ups as well. In his 27 years as head coach, Zukowski said he has never had three quarterbacks who could play. But this year, that is not the case.

Last season, the boys won league and districts, while the girls took second in league and second in districts.
"We have seven seniors, four boys and three girls," said John Durheim, Cashmere head coach. "All the rest are underclassmen. Some are first-year runners. We are fairly young and inexperienced."
For the girls, sophomore Kea Paton is back to run her way into the Cashmere record books. The talented runner finished seventh in State last year. A solid number two is sophomore Angela Knishka, but she is still recovering from knee surgery. Syd Green is also out for around four weeks. Other key contributors are Aston Weddle and Molly Kenoyer.
