Rich Heritage
As I watched my four-year old daughter cling to the rope tow for the first time, I was so proud of her. When she skied down to the bottom of the bunny hill, smiling and happy, I was also proud of our community. It wasn't that long ago (twenty years now?) when the alpine hills were struggling just to operate. Volunteers spent hours calling to line up people for the next week of shifts while others ran the tows and worked in the lodge. I can even remember taking a few shifts in the tow shack and the lodge as a teenager. I wasn't really aware of all of the issues, though I remember that insurance was expensive and there was never enough snow. There was no tubing hill and the continued operation of the alpine hills was in doubt.

My brother and I spent almost every winter weekend riding the tows over and over. I didn't give much thought to why all of those volunteers were working so hard to keep the tows running; after all, their families likely had as much fun as we did. Maybe it was just about the kids or perhaps it was about this community's ski heritage. In the end, the reasons weren't as important as the fact that they succeeded in giving the Ski Hill a future- a future where the next generation of skiers can grin in triumph when they conquer their own mountains. So to all those who helped keep the tows running then, and to those who work hard now, thank you.
