Good reasons for separated church and state
There seems to be some confusion today about why religion was singled out as one of the freedoms the founders of this country felt needed to be protected. One of the main reasons at the time wasn't that our forefathers felt that religion, namely Christianity in this country, needed to be protected for the government, it was more that it needed to be protected from the government. Back in Colonial times only Rhode Island and Pennsylvania had what we might consider real religious freedom today.

Want more on ballot issues
My husband and I relocated to Okanogan County two years ago and love living here. We spent all our life in King County and looked forward to reading the local newspaper during election time in the fall. I really miss not reading the pros and cons of the issues and candidates, especially the ballot issues in the coming election.

Stand up for constitution
I stand with the Constitution of the U.S.A. Specifically the first Amendment (made applicable to the states by the 14th Amendment). The first Amendment states C ongress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, and it continues concerning freedom of speech, press, assembly and petition of government for grievances.

Not one size fits all
Back when I was a Journalism student had I ever wanted to find an editorial rant that violated nearly every ethical rule of what is considered the test of a free press I could not find a "better" example than Publisher Forhan's editorial (August 26).
