Marijuana compliance checks

In the first complete round of compliance checks of retail marijuana retail stores, 19 Washington recreational retail marijuana businesses sold marijuana to an underage investigative aide. Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB) enforcement officers working with underage investigative aides, checked each retail marijuana business for sales of marijuana to minors. The checks essentially represent an 88 percent no-sales-to-minors compliance rate.

"Our goal is 100 percent compliance," said WSLB Board Chair Jane Rushford. "While perfect compliance is always a challenging goal, it is clearly in everyone's interest that our licensees be vigilant about preventing underage sales."

Leavenworth Village Voices recruiting for new season
Leavenworth Village Voices is getting ready to kick off a new season in late summer and is looking for individuals who love to sing. The organization invites prospective members to a picnic on Monday, Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. in Lion's Club Park in Leavenworth. Individuals can learn more about the group while enjoying food, beverages, and-of course-singing.

"We welcome all new members," says Village Voices President Kathy Lynn, "particularly bass and tenor voices to strengthen those sections."

Leavenworth Village Voices, a nonprofit community choir founded in 1982, is comprised of locals who share a passion for singing and contributing to Leavenworth's Bavarian theme and festive atmosphere.

"Our mission is to enrich our community and the visitor experience by promoting choral music and traditional Bavarian songs, while providing an opportunity for locals to sing in a professionally-directed, mixed voices chorus," Lynn explains.

Larry Henderson, who is entering his 15th year as director of the choir, notes that formal musical training is not required but that members are expected to commit to attending rehearsals and learning their music.

Saving consumers money too

A Shelton man hires a contractor to build a deck and pays him cash. But a month later, the deck is only half-finished and the contractor is long gone.

A Thurston County homeowner hires a landscaping crew to work on her yard and pays a substantial amount of cash up front. Then the landscaper disappears.

To help protect you and your property from these kinds of scams, state agencies are urging consumers to "Check with the state before it's too late!"

Through its website, the state has made it easy and convenient to see if a business is registered with the state, behind on its taxes, has complaints filed against it or been subject to state enforcement actions. You can also report people you suspect are cheating on their workers' compensation or collecting unemployment benefits while working under the table.
