Sandy Cohen begins as Wenatchee Valley Museum director
Sandy Cohen started his new job on Monday as director of the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center. The museum had been without a permanent director since December, when Brenda Abney resigned to take a museum job in Arizona.

Cohen, a Baltimore native, recently served as director of the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum in New Mexico. He is a former director of the LBJ Library and Museum in Austin, Texas, and assistant director of the National Museum of American Jewish Military History in Washington, D.C.

"I've had a fascinating career with these national museums, but my first love is the history of local communities," he said. "I love learning how they were built, what makes them tick, who have been some of their characters." He said he was inspired by his grandfather, who often took him down to the Baltimore waterfront and told him stories of that multicultural city's development.

Chelan PUD invites customers to be part of pilot program for a day-use parking pass
New public power benefit program set to get underway - open houses set for the public

Chelan County PUD's newly-adopted strategic plan calls for providing some public power benefits to its customer-owners. Identified as one of the highest priorities by customers, Topic Team members and Strategy Partners during the year-long strategic planning process was the waiver of parking fees at the three PUD parks managed by Washington State Parks. This includes Daroga, Lincoln Rock and Wenatchee Confluence.

"During the strategic planning process, it became clear that many of our customers would welcome the opportunity to use these three parks if there weren't any parking fees," said Chelan PUD License and Compliance Manager Michelle Smith. "Many local residents don't purchase the state-issued Discover Pass that can be used in all State Park locations. We know that the day-use fee can deter local users to our parks that are managed by State Parks. The Chelan PUD parking pass would eliminate day-use parking fees for our residential customers and for Chelan County residents. The same rules would apply to our permit that State Parks uses with the Discover Pass."

Under the PUD's proposed pilot study, PUD residential customers or Chelan County residents can receive the PUD parking pass if they agree to keep track of how often they use the pass and at which park. The pilot study will begin July 15, 2015 and last through Dec. 31, 2016. During that time, users will be asked to participate in two or three brief surveys. The information gathered from the pilot study group will help the PUD determine if the fee-waiver program is feasible in future years. Residential customers and county residents can apply for the pass through Sept. 30, 2016.

Summer dangers to kids and pets when left in hot cars
The summer months can be a deadly time for children and pets left in a vehicle, even for a short amount of time. AAA recommends that parents, caregivers and pet owners never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle, even if the vehicle is parked in the shade or has a window open. Even on a mild or overcast day, the internal temperature of the vehicle can quickly increase causing the child or pet to suffer heatstroke or possible death. In 2014, 30 young children in the U.S. died of heatstroke because they were left in a vehicle.
