CHS parapro retires at 80
Idalee McCormick wrote what might be the last verse of a very special song, by announcing her retirement effective June 11.

McCormick, 80, spent the last five years as a paraprofessional for the music department at Cashmere High School, whose staff includes her daughter-in-law Dawn.

Bring your own device starts next fall at CMS
Part 1 of 2

Bring Your Own Device, a new set of guidelines meant to integrate handheld phones into the classroom experience, will arrive to Cashmere Middle School at the start the 2013-14 school year.

Rob Cline, principal of Cashmere Middle School, described it as new rules and procedures on how children may use the technology. Technology, Cline said, with which in many cases the children already are familiar.

It's a museum, so it's in with the old. But now, it's in with the new, too.

Thanks to 20 gadgets slightly bigger than a cellphone, the Cashmere Museum now offers an enhanced experience to visitors: Audio tours.

River Fest returns to Cashmere
With pecs, hugs and rock 'n' roll, water and paddling enthusiasts reveled in the Cashmere sunshine during yet another edition of the Wenatchee River Festival.

The festival had almost all the sights and sounds of summer, a good two weeks before the official start of the season. Burgers on the grill, live music, children on the playground and grownups on the water. All within the friendly confines of Riverside Park and its namesake community center.

The new and old art of Marie Vecchio
Marie Vecchio is at a loss for words.

A self-described late bloomer when it comes to music, Vecchio made friends with the fiddle at 45, starting a 14-year relationship that flourishes to this day and to which she only has one explanation.

"I love the fiddle," she said.

Cashmere athlete stars at Special Olympics
Jennifer Beem brought home the hardware from the Special Olympics regional competition.

Beem, 27, swam at Cheney's Eastern Washington University May 4, earning three first-place medals and a spot at the Special Olympics' statewide Summer Games at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way last weekend.

A music lifer comes to Cashmere this week.

"I always had a gift for hearing music. I would hear a song and my brain would just record it," said Josh Snodgrass, a Seattle-based, Wisconsin-raised guitarist.

Special filing period coming up for candidates
Candidates like longtime Fire District 6 member Bob Wildfang will get one more chance to file for office this week in Chelan County from June 4-6.

Nissa Burger from the county's election office, said that a federal law requires military voters to receive their ballots 45 days prior to an election. So this year, the candidates filing week was moved to May to accommodate this federal requirement for the primaries.

CVR: I have to be honest, I did not see this coming, three state titles in four years. The question is, did you?

Jeff Carlson: That's what you strive for and that's the goal, to build a program like this, a program that the community can be proud of and the kids want to be a part of. Obviously we've had some great talented kids in our program, and that's allowed us to have the success we've had. It's pretty special, what we have going and we have great assistant coaches and a lot of different factors. It's something we're pretty proud of, though.

Sheriff question remains unanswered, mayor says
In the wake of the last meeting between county and city officials, Cashmere Mayor Jeff Gomes said nothing has changed in the positions from either side regarding a new law enforcement contract.

At the May 29 meeting, Gomes said, the county gave cities a price-per-officer rate, which Gomes noted would change in the future
