Cross country team refocuses
Kacie Thrift
Staff Writer

The Cashmere boys and girls cross country teams competed in the Tri-Cities last weekend at the Pasco Bulldog Invite.

The boys team held their own against bigger schools like Eastmont and Southridge scoring 197 points to finish in sixth place. Kamiakin finished in first with 50 points. The Cashmere boys finished in front of Caribou Trail League competitor Quincy who finished with 212 points.

"We ran a pretty good race against good competition, on a difficult course," said Cashmere Head Coach, John Durheim.

Junior Drew Van Polen had the fastest time for the Bulldogs, finishing in 14th place with a time of 17:37. Freshman Jonathan Mangas finished less than a minute behind Van Polen in 30th place with a time of 18:12. Junior Oliver Fernandez finished 9 seconds after in 38th place.

Dawson Taylor, senior, took 59th place with a time of 18:53 and junior Ricardo Naranjo finished right behind him to take 60th place.

Durheim said Naranjo had an outstanding race along with Brock Steele who finished the race with a time of 19:20. Freshman Cole Paton ran in the varsity race and finished with a time of 20:10.

The girls team took fourth place beating out Eastmont with 149 points. The girls were close to the third place team, St. John-Endicott, who finished with 139 points. Kamiakin won the meet with only 28 points.

"Angela Knishka, Kea Paton, and Sydney Green ran very strong races for our girls," Durheim said. "It was by far our best effort this year."

Senior Knishka held with the top runners for Kamiakin, Cheney and Southridge for the whole race. She finished in fifth place in 19:56. It was her fastest 5,000 meter run this season.

Senior Paton took 14th place, following less than two minutes behind Knishka, with a time of 21:27. Senior Green ran the race in 22:19 for 22nd place. Both girls ran their fastest 5,000 meter race of the season.

Senior Ashton Weddie finished in 56th place with a time of 23:58. Sophomore Jasmine Gonzalez finished in 25:18 for 75th place. Teammate Molly Kenoyer finished right behind her for 80th place with a time of 26:19.

"We had three good practices this past week," Durheim said. "Two of which were outside. I think this refocused the team and made them work harder in the meet.

Due to the particulate levels from the smoke, the cross country teams had to practice indoors for some time. Durheim said the team is still behind from where they should be at this time of the season because of the smoke problems. However, he believes the runners are putting extra effort into each practice to narrow that gap.

On Oct. 2, the cross country teams competed in the Omak Invitational but results were unavailable at press time. The next meet for the Bulldogs will be this Saturday at the Richland Invite. The first race begins at 12:55 p.m. Not all runners will be participating in this race. Some runners will be going to Cascade on Saturday for the Hole in the Wall meet.
