The Bulldogs wrestling team will continue to build this year with a fuller roster than the previous season.
Last season, the boys had 13 kids and had to forfeit at least five weight classes at every match. This year, with a large freshman class of eight wrestlers, and a few new upper classmen, Cashmere Head Coach, Aaron Bessonette, said the team should only have to forfeit two weight classes.
"We have a young team this year but optimistically we have increased our numbers. We have about 20 kids this year," he said.
Bessonette said last year went well winning the Hoquaim Invitational and seven boys made wrestled in the final match before the State Tournament.
"If they would have won that last match they would have gone to State," Bessonette said. "Unfortunately, that was a bad round and only two of the seven won. We only took two guys to State last year."
However, one of the boys, Jacob James, who went to State placed 8th, will be returning this year as a junior. He will be wrestling in the 138-weight class and according to Bessonette he is already close to his weight goal. James is the only returning State medalist the team has this year.
Ethan Visser, junior, will be another key wrestler for the team. He went to State as a freshman in the 106-weight class but lost in the final round before State last year when he wrestled in the 113-weight class. Bessonette said Visser is a tough kid and is expected to make another appearance at State this season.
Freshman Bryant Bubel will be one of the better freshmen in the league this year, according to Bessonette. He will be wrestling in the 132-weight class and has a good chance at making a State appearance.
The dark horse of the league will be junior Brock Steele. Bessonette said he is one of the most underrated wrestlers in the league and is tough. He will be wrestling in the 145-weight class.
"For this season, we are young but we have good kids who have a good team culture. We are still a year away, next year is when we are going to have a pretty competitive hand," Bessonette said.
The Bulldogs start the new season on Nov. 26 at the Moses Lake Jamboree starting at 4 p.m. The first home meet is on Dec. 13 against Brewster at 7 p.m.
"Early on we are working on fundamentals, mental toughness, and getting in shape," Bessonette said. "When we get into post season you definitely have to fine tune technique but that's useless until you can get there physically and mentally."
