Girls ready for another big year

The girls' basketball team thought they were on their way to the championship game with a record 20-0. The next two games however, made the season end faster than they were expecting.

Last basketball season, the girls lost in the District Championship game to Okangoan, after beating them twice in the regular season. Then they had to go up against two-time defending State Champion Freeman and lost after Freeman scored the last seven points of the game to win by three.

Okanogan went on to win the State Title in the championship game against Freeman.

"That just shows how tough the league is and will be even tougher this year," said Chris Cloakey, Cashmere Head Coach.

A new season is coming up and Cloakey, said the plan is to not miss a beat even with a few key players starting the season injured.

Only one starting player graduated last year along with two other major players. However, two other starting players Breanne Knishka and Mikayla Sites will start the season on the sidelines as their injuries heal.

"Our goals haven't changed," Cloakey said. "Everybody has people hurt but we were competitive last year and we will be competitive this year."

Junior Lauren Johnson and senior Angela Knishka are two starters who will return to the roster healthy.

The pre-season will start with the girls heading to LaSalle on Nov. 30. According to Cloakey, LaSalle is just as aggressive as the Bulldogs. Cloakey said the pre-season will be a good warm up for the girls as they go against three tough teams; Lasalle, Wenatchee, and East Wenatchee. The first league game is away at Quincy on Dec. 11.

"We are excited. Last year, we pressed well, ran well, and we struggled more on the half court," Cloakey said. "Our sites are set high and that's not going to change."

Cloakey said the girls speed and defensive pressure are their biggest strengths. He hopes to have Sites back in the middle of December.

This year, Brewster and Quincy have been added to the Caribou Trail League. Cloakey said Brewster will be another one of the top teams in the league with Okanogan, who won State last year. Along with Chelan, who competed at State last year, and Cascade.

"Every single one of these girls will hustle and play tough defense this year," Cloakey said of his upcoming team.

The first home game will be against the 4A team Eastmont on Dec. 4 at 6 p.m.
