The Cashmere girls basketball team is playing stronger, according to Head Coach Chris Cloakey, now that the majority of the varsity team is healthy and back in the game.

Last week, Cashmere dominated play against the Quincy Jacks and Tonasket Tigers in two blowout games.

The Bulldogs hosted Quincy on Jan. 14 and started strong in the first quarter taking an 18-point lead. Cloakey said the girls came out strong and kept going. Not only were the girls focusing on their defense and not turning the ball over, but they shot over 50 percent.

After playing a solid three quarters, the Bulldogs only took six shots in the fourth. Cashmere took their sixth league win of the season 64-18.

Junior Lauren Johnson went 9-for-13 from the field and scored a total of 22 points. Angela Knishka, senior, scored 10, Erica Spanjer scored 8, and Mikayla Sites and Kaylee Caudill each scored six points.

Corine Turner led the team with five rebounds and Sites had six assists.

The following Friday, the Bulldogs went on the road to play against the Tonasket Tigers in another dominating game.

"The first time we played Tonasket, we had six and a half people and this time one and a half of those people played junior varsity," Cloakey said. "It's nice having all these kids back. To have 10 girls to scrimmage with in practice is huge. We're a lot deeper than in the beginning of the year."

Early in the game, Cashmere took a big lead scoring 25 points against Tonasket's five points. Cloakey said the team did very little pressing and tried a few different things defensively to run the clock.

Knishka had 16 points, Karly Thies had 10, and Johnson had 15 with five assists. Tasha Kowatsch led the team in rebounds with five. Sites played tough defense to steal the ball four times.

"We focused on executing and not turning the ball over. The starters only played four minutes in the second half against Tonasket and we only had two turnovers in first half against them," Cloakey said. "We are trying to take care of the ball and have good possessions."

To finish up the season the Bulldogs will play against the top four teams in the league.

"We expect to do better this time we went 1-3 the first time through," Cloakey said. "We feel like every team we played is beatable for us if we play to our potential and make shots sometimes they fall and sometimes they don't."

Cashmere hosted Cascade on Jan. 22 but results were unavailable at press time. This Saturday the Bulldogs will hit the road to play against Okanogan who Cashmere is tied with for third place in the league. The game starts at 6:30 p.m.
