Three Cashmere wrestlers earned themselves a trip to the Tacoma Dome this weekend to compete at the Mat Classic XXV, the State Wrestling Tournament. Last weekend, six Cashmere wrestlers headed to the Regional Tournament in Chelan to fight for the top four spots in their weight class to make it to State.

Juniors Jacob James, Ethan Visser, and Brock Steele all placed in the top four of their weight class at the Regional Tournament. Jacob James came in second place, wrestling in the 138 pound weight class, behind Anton King of Medical Lake.

"King is undefeated on the season and has proved to be a handful for James," said Cashmere Head Coach Aaron Bessonette.

James battled King for six minutes in the Regional Championship match, but King wasn't ready to give up his perfect season just yet. James lost to King but he still earned a medal and a trip to State. This will be James' second time competing at the State Tournament.

Visser also made the Regional final match at 132 pounds. He once again faced off against league opponent Eric Garcia of Chelan. These two wrestlers went up against each other in the District final on Feb. 2 at Cashmere.

"Ethan went move for move against Garcia, but he fell short by a decision taking home the second place medal," Bessonette said.

This is also Visser's second time making it to State.

Steele earned his first trip to the Tacoma Dome by knocking off a tough opponent in Darren Miller of Riverside (Spokane) at 152 pounds. Three of the top five wrestlers in the State were in Steele's region, leaving only one spot to State for the other competitors.

Bessonette said he and the coaching staff knew it was going to be a war between Steele and Miller for the fourth place spot.

"We were all on the edge of our seats. The score going back and forth in rounds one and two. In the third round, however, Brock's determination and endurance prevailed. As he has done time and time again this year, Brock found a way to put him [Miller] in a cradle and pin him before time expired."

Bessonette said it was an emotional match for Steele and he truly earned his spot to State.

This weekend, the three Cashmere wrestlers will head to the Tacoma Dome to compete for medals. Wrestlers who finish in the top eight of their weight class will receive a medal.

"All three wrestlers are battle tested and confident. Anything can happen in the Tacoma Dome. The hard part is getting there. We truly believe all three kids are capable of bringing home a medal this year," Bessonette said.
