Despite wildfires and closures, much of the forest is still open
Even though some wildfires remain uncontrolled and several area closures are in effect for public safety, large areas of the Okanogan-Wenatchee Forest remain open to recreation.

"Fires have burned across thousands of acres of this forest, and firefighters are still working to control some difficult fires in Okanogan, Chelan, and Kittitas Counties," said Mike Balboni, Okanogan-Wenatchee Forest Supervisor. "But this is a very large National Forest, and several of our districts have been spared large fires so far this season," he said.

Forest Service seeking comments for 'over-snow vehicle' regulations
he U.S. Forest Service is proposing to regulate where and when "over-snow vehicles" such as snowmobiles are used on national forests, and is seeking public comment on the proposal.

The public has until Aug. 4 to submit comments on the proposed change to the Forest Service's Travel Management Rule, which would require designation of roads, trails and areas on national forest lands where over-snow vehicle use is permitted, restricted or prohibited.

Stevens Pass summer operations are expanding
It used to be ski areas sat mostly empty in the summer time. Not anymore, at least for Stevens Pass Mountain Resort. The resort is booming these days with a Mountain Bike Park, scenic rides, hiking and disc golf.

The Steven Pass Mountain Bike Park is in its third full season of operations.

"It has definitely grown. This year, we have seen crazy growth with a couple new trails we opened at the start of last year," said Nate Escalona, Stevens Pass marketing manager. "People are really starting to come up here and try it out. A lot of the local contingent is still into it. We are trying to have something new each year."
