Leavenworth Summer Theater presents 'The Drowsy Chaperone'

Dubbed a musical within a comedy, the Leavenworth Summer Theater production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” opens July 29 at the Festhalle Theater in Leavenworth. From left, Daina Toevs as The Chaperone and Morgan Bader as Aldopho.
"The Drowsy Chaperone" was dubbed the "musical within the comedy," and certainly the title seems to aptly describe the latest Leavenworth Summer Theater production. The show debuted in Toronto in 1998, then on Broadway in 2006, winning several Tony awards.

The show revolves around a guy who sits in his apartment and listens to his favorite musicals on albums. You get the sense he doesn't get out much, but then he invites the audience to listen to his favorite album, which is the 1928 show, "The Drowsy Chaperone."

Leavenworth Summer Theater presents the classic, 'Fiddler on the Roof'
The show has the music, song and dancing you are used in Leavenworth Summer Theater, but set in Czarist Russia in the early 1900s, "Fiddler on the Roof" also depicts the stark anti-semitism of the period.

For Director Phil Lacey, the show marks an exciting challenge.

"It's definitely as not as bubbly as some of the other musicals we have done. There are definitely some historical elements to it that are much darker," Lacey said. "But, at the same time, it faces all that with the power of hope, which goes along with what LST is trying to express to the community."

The incomparable Susan Gubsch will perform in her 300th show as Mother Abbess, when the show opens on Friday.

The show is being directed by LST vet Phil Lacey, 29, who has served as a choreographer, performer and director for the past few seasons.
