CASHMERE — The Cashmere City Council has extended the city's moratorium on new mini-storage facilities through Dec. 31 as officials continue work on development regulations addressing the use.
The council approved the extension Aug. 24, keeping the temporary prohibition in place while the city works through comprehensive plan and development code updates.
The extension aligns the moratorium with the city's Dec. 31 deadline for completing required code updates under Washington's Growth Management Act.
The city originally imposed the moratorium to give officials time to evaluate where and under what conditions additional mini-storage development should be allowed rather than continuing to process proposals under existing regulations.
City officials said the additional time will allow that work to continue as part of the broader code update process.
The council also accepted an additional $21,700 in grant funding from the Washington State Department of Commerce for the city's comprehensive land-use planning work.
The funding represents the final phase of a larger grant totaling approximately $125,000. City staff said the grant requires no local match, with most of the funding going toward contracted planning work and a portion covering city staff time.
Officials expect to complete the required code updates by Dec. 31, although additional changes the city had hoped to address may have to wait.
The council unanimously approved both the moratorium extension and acceptance of the Commerce funding.
