OLYMPIA — The Washington State Board of Education is accepting applications from current high school sophomores to serve as a Student Board Member for the 2026–2028 term.
Applications are open through Tuesday, March 31. The position is open to students from across the state, regardless of background or postsecondary plans.
The board includes two Student Board Members who represent more than one million students statewide. Student members have the same responsibilities as adult members, including attending board meetings, participating in discussions and voting on policy decisions.
In addition to board meetings, student members meet with lawmakers and other elected officials to discuss education policy affecting Washington schools.
“Serving on the Board has not only given me the chance to represent my community and students statewide, but also the chance to learn more about myself and the education system I’m a part of,” said Abby Wu, the board’s senior student member from Pullman High School. “This experience, from application to the work I partake in today, has equipped me with skills I’ve utilized to become a force for change.”
Applicants must be current sophomores who will attend a public or private school in Washington during the 2026–2028 term. Prior experience in education policy or formal student leadership is not required.
Eligible students must demonstrate a positive academic or extracurricular record through grades, activities, accomplishments or recommendations from peers, educators or community members.
Student board members are reimbursed for travel expenses and may receive a stipend of up to $100 per day for board meetings and other required activities.
The board is also encouraging educators and community leaders to help share information about the opportunity with students. According to the board, encouragement from trusted adults is one of the most common factors influencing students to apply.
Additional information, including application materials, is available through the Washington State Board of Education.
