Cashmere homeschooled student serves as Senate Page in Olympia

OLYMPIA – Senator Brad Hawkins of the 12th legislative district recently welcomed Alaina Cecil, a homeschooled student from Cashmere, to serve as a Senate Page in Olympia. Cecil's inclusion in the program followed an unexpected opportunity that arose after her mother contacted Senator Hawkins during a legislative session.

Upon learning Cecil was of eligible age and that her family was previously unaware of the Page program, Hawkins acted swiftly to ensure her participation, filling the last available slot. Cecil distinguished herself during her tenure, demonstrating a maturity level that impressed her peers and the program coordinators.

During her week in Olympia, Cecil engaged in various activities integral to the Senate Page program. She interacted with other Pages from across the state, participated in a Senate floor session, and had the opportunity to meet with the Governor in his office, experiences that underscored the educational and experiential value of the program.

Senator Hawkins highlighted the Page program's role in providing young individuals with a unique insight into the legislative process. "Paging is such a great opportunity, and kids learn so much while here," Hawkins said. "Alaina was perfect for it. She is mature beyond her years and really enjoyed herself. She met many Pages from other parts of the state. She also worked during one of the Senate floor sessions and even met the Governor during a visit to his office. It’s been a memorable week, which is what Paging is all about.”

Cecil's experience in Olympia serves as a testament to the Senate Page program's effectiveness in fostering a deeper understanding of civic duty and participation among young people.
