Scare-Crazy in Cashmere

CASHMERE - Scarecrows are taking over the streets of Cashmere again this October for the 10th annual Scarecrow Walking Tour, known as Scare-Crazy.

Visitors are encouraged to stroll downtown Cashmere to see all the creative scarecrows created by business owners and residents.

Each year, scarecrows are displayed, enlivening the downtown area and drawing visitors from around the region to stroll through town, capture photos, discover the Cashmere community, and enjoy the scenery while the creations are on display.

Many businesses participate, including the Cashmere Library.

“We try to support the scare crazy community activities,” Cashmere branch librarian Lisa Lawless said. “A lot of the businesses like to do it, and anybody can participate. It’s just a lot of fun, and it makes Cashmere look so festive. Everyone is so creative, and I love to see what businesses and residents and different individuals come up with.”

“It makes it really fun to walk around Cashmere,” she said. “Cashmere is a good town to walk around.”

Lawless said walking around town is especially pretty and festive when the leaves change to their fall colors and the scarecrows are decorating the sidewalks.

The Cashmere Library’s scarecrow theme this year is Gnome Your Way to Reading.

Lawless and Friends of the Library board members JoAnne Prusa and Nancy Fike had a lot of fun coming up with their theme and decorating their scarecrow.

The scarecrow’s beard is made from an animal pelt, and the boots are made from big gnarly pumpkins, Lawless said.

During October, self-guided scarecrow maps will be available outside the Chamber office at 103 Cottage Avenue and participating businesses.

Enter the Grand Prize Giveaway by completing the map tour. Select scarecrows will be assigned a scarecrow badge, which you can locate and record on your map. Turn in completed maps by October 31 to be entered for a chance to win the Grand Prize Giveaway.

The Grand Prize Giveaway is composed of items donated by participating businesses. The winner will be randomly selected on Nov. 2.

Scarecrows will be judged at an undisclosed date and time, with awards given for the Grand Champion, People’s Choice, Best Ensemble, and Best Business Theme.

Fans can participate by nominating scarecrows for the People’s Choice award on the “Scare-Crazy in Cashmere” Facebook page and voting for their favorite. Winners will be announced on Oct. 16 via Facebook.
